About This Quote

In the early 20th century, a number of American writers began to examine Southern society. A number of them were women, and many of them wrote about themes that reflected their own experiences as women. In the book "The Southern Lady" by Bell Irvin Wiley, among other things, he writes about the Southern women as being "capable of anything but being decorative." He also writes about Southern women as being capable of being funny and being very clever. With all these characteristics, he then goes on to say that they are not very ambitious. They are content to stay at home and tend to be very conservative.
